They both knew, if not the specifics of what the bandits wanted, the general shape of it. They wanted to harm him. Maybe harm his abilities as a warrior, or his capacity to lead. At the very least they planned to hurt him, and take two hours doing it.
But that was a price he would pay for his men.
Xiao Jingyan offers himself to bandits in return for the scouts they captured. What happens is maybe predictable-- and arguably worth it for the return of his men-- but no less traumatic.
