... this would be an easier question to answer if I knew for certain what the hell I was writing...

In regards to (I think) Penny Dreadful, the thing it does that I absolutely love is how screamingly well it deconstructs all of its seemingly straightforward tropes. The mysterious witch is actually a devout Catholic. The driven father and explorer is The Actual Patriarchal Worst *and knows it*. The brilliant scientists keep playing God and never learning from their mistakes. The caddish good-old-boy American has a vicious side. It handles these deconstructions incredibly well, too.

Honestly my canon (Shadowhunters TV), is terribly iddy for me to begin with. So many buttons being pushed. Great bisexual character, gay character coming to terms with himself and his feelings on his own terms, Great supportive sibling relationship, wacky worldbuilding that's great to play with, lots of politics that can escalate, canon soulbond type relationship, a lot of supernatural type of creatures which means 1000 different options for kink (that's where the current idfic comes in), and everybody is super, super hot.

I think it's one of those shows that's technically very imperfect, but that's why there's so much room to play with things? I haven't been this inspired in years.

For the Chronicles of Amber, I like that the characters have so much time behind them, so much history with each other. I like the gaps in the world building because they let me make things up. The canvas is huge, and absolutely anything is possible.
